  • Based on supporting data and recent FDA approval, vandetanib (category 2A) was added as an option for the treatment of recurrent or persistent medullary thyroid carcinoma for patients in the following settings:
    • Locoregional disease: Vandetanib was added as an option to consider for the treatment of unresectable symptomatic or progressive disease.

    • Asymptomatic, distant metastases: Vandetanib was added as an option to consider for the treatment of progressive disease.
    • Disseminated symptomatic disease: Vandetanib was added as a treatment option.
  • A corresponding footnote "j" was added to vandetanib that states, "Only health care professionals and pharmacies certified through the vandetanib Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program, a restricted distribution program, will be able to prescribe and dispense the drug."
  • Footnote "k" was revised as follows: "While not FDA approved for treatment of thyroid cancer, other commercially available small molecule kinase inhibitors (such as sorafenib or sunitinib) can be considered if clinical trials or vandetanib are not available or appropriate, or if the patient progresses on vandetanib."
