Jake B. Guinto, PhD, Manager, Oncology Drugs & Biologics

On March 14, 2012, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®) will conduct the 2012 NCCN Pharmacy Program: Best Practices in Oncology Pharmacy Management™ to be held at The Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, Florida. This half-day event is designed to educate oncology pharmacists on the latest developments in oncology care as they apply to best practices in high-quality cancer care. The program will feature a series of presentations given by speakers who are recognized leaders in oncology.

In the "Supportive Care in Oncology Pharmacy" session, pharmacists will learn about pharmacologic and other types of support to ensure the greatest quality of life possible for patients with cancer. The use of antiemetics, management of fever and neutropenia, and pain are some of the topics to be addressed. Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear an overview on "New and Emerging Drugs and Biologics", which will cover a number of novel cancer therapies approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as emerging agents.  Further, a topic that is front of mind for many pharmacists within the oncology community is oral therapies and patient adherence. Pharmacists will learn about the factors contributing to low compliance and ways to resolve these issues. Lastly, the program will end with a case study presentation on "Pharmacy Interventions that Improve Quality of Care".

The 2012 NCCN Pharmacy Program: Best Practices in Oncology Pharmacy Management™ promises to be a unique, educational event. By staying abreast on the latest advances in oncology care, pharmacists will be able to make informed decisions, sound recommendations, and provide the most effective and efficient care to patients with cancer.
