FORT WASHINGTON, PA — The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) is pleased to announce that it will hold the Second Annual Middle East and Northern Africa NCCN Clinical Guidelines Congress in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from April 23 – 26, 2009. The Congress will be a collaborative educational effort with the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) to improve the safety, effectiveness, and quality of cancer care in the Middle East and North Africa.

SEHA is a public joint stock company that owns and operates Abu Dhabi’s 12 public hospitals and 40 ambulatory clinics. NCCN and SEHA will be supported by the Health Authority - Abu Dhabi (HA-AD), the government regulatory body which is in charge of licensing and healthcare policy in Abu Dhabi.

“We are grateful for the invitation and opportunity to collaborate with our colleagues in the Middle East and North Africa,” says William T. McGivney, PhD, Chief Executive Officer, NCCN. “It is critical that the scientific evidence that is the basis for cancer care guidelines be discussed and implemented by experts across the globe in order to improve outcomes for patients whom we serve.”

The NCCN Guidelines Congress brings together leading clinicians from the Middle East, Northern Africa and the United States. Experts from NCCN Member Institutions will present the latest recommendations and updates from the NCCN Guidelines. These guidelines are widely recognized and applied in the United States as the standard for clinical policy in oncology. Thought leaders from the Middle East and North Africa will provide their perspectives on the management of specific diagnoses and discuss issues related to differences across patient subpopulations, including the availability of health care technology such as drugs, devices, and procedures.

“SEHA is committed to bringing world class healthcare to the residents of Abu Dhabi,” says Saif Bader Al Qubaisi, Managing Director, SEHA. “We want to assure the availability of evidence-based best practice in cancer treatment and innovative technology for applications in cancer care that are based upon sound clinical results and the expert judgment of leading clinicians. We are pleased to assemble leaders from across our region to bring better cancer care to patients.”

The Congress will focus on the appropriate management of patients diagnosed with breast, prostate, colon, non small-cell lung, ovarian, and hepatobiliary cancers, as well as non Hodgkin’s lymphomas and supportive care issues.

Since 2003, NCCN has offered the NCCN International Guidelines Symposia Series to communicate the NCCN Guidelines in a direct and interactive way around the world to local oncologists and other clinical professionals.
