Program Overview

The NCCN 2007 Nursing Program is designed to provide advanced practice oncology nurses with information on a variety of topics integral to quality cancer care. It consists of several presentations focused on the complexities of cancer care, symptom management and supportive care issues, and leading strategies to advance nursing research. This presentation will focus on fever and neutropenia, a serious complication from cancer-related therapy that can lead to significant morbidity. This presentation will describe the clinical significance of fever and neutropenia, the patient-related and therapy-related factors which increase the risk for fever and neutropenia, and current options for prophylactic therapy.

Educational Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to do the following:

  • Describe the clinical significance of fever and neutropenia for patients with cancer
  • Summarize patient-related and therapy-related factors that can increase the risk for the development of fever and neutropenia
  • Identify current options for the prophylactic management of fever and neutropenia

Intended Audience

This educational activity is designed to meet the educational needs of advanced practice nurses who manage patients with cancer.

Activity Instructions
