Prophylactic Therapy: Identifying Patients at Risk for Fever and NeutropeniaA presentation from the NCCN 2007 Nursing Program: Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse in Quality Oncology Care™ held in Hollywood, Florida, on March 14, 2007 Presenter Christopher Friese, RN, PhD, AOCN Faculty Disclosure Statement Dr. Friese has disclosed that he has financial interests, arrangements, or affiliations with the manufacturer of products and devices to be discussed in his presentation or who may financially support the educational activity. He has received honoraria as a speaker and for advisory board participation for Amgen Inc. He is also a stockholder in Amgen Inc. and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Coporation. Dr. Friese has indicated that his presentation will include discussion of investigational or unlabeled uses of pegfilgrastim, filgrastim, and various anti-infectives and antifungals. Program Overview The NCCN 2007 Nursing Program is designed to provide advanced practice oncology nurses with information on a variety of topics integral to quality cancer care. It consists of several presentations focused on the complexities of cancer care, symptom management and supportive care issues, and leading strategies to advance nursing research. This presentation will focus on fever and neutropenia, a serious complication from cancer-related therapy that can lead to significant morbidity. This presentation will describe the clinical significance of fever and neutropenia, the patient-related and therapy-related factors which increase the risk for fever and neutropenia, and current options for prophylactic therapy. Educational Objectives Following this activity, participants should be able to do the following:
Intended Audience This educational activity is designed to meet the educational needs of advanced practice nurses who manage patients with cancer. Activity Instructions Contact hours will be awarded to participants who listen to the presentation and complete the evaluation.
