Recognition and Management of Delirium in Cancer PatientsA presentation from the NCCN 2007 Nursing Program: Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse in Quality Oncology Care™ held in Hollywood, Florida, on March 14, 2007 Presenter Laura Herald Hoofring, RN, MSN, ARNP-PMH Faculty Disclosure Statement Ms. Hoofring has disclosed that she has no financial interests, arrangements, or affiliations with the manufacturer of products and devices to be discussed in her presentation or who may financially support the educational activity. Program Overview The NCCN 2007 Nursing Program is designed to provide advanced practice oncology nurses with information on a variety of topics integral to quality cancer care. It consists of several presentations focused on the complexities of cancer care, symptom management and supportive care issues, and leading strategies to advance nursing research. This presentation will focus on how delirium from cancer or cancer-related therapy can be a distressing side effect for the patient and family. This presentation will discuss cancer-related and therapy-related factors which increase a patient’s risk for delirium, the impact of delirium on a patient’s quality of life, and strategies for early recognition and management of delirium. Educational Objectives Following this activity, participants should be able to do the following:
Intended Audience This educational activity is designed to meet the educational needs of advanced practice nurses who manage patients with cancer. Activity Instructions Contact hours will be awarded to participants who listen to the presentation and complete the evaluation. Participants should review the learning objectives and faculty disclosure statements prior to listening to a presentation in its entirety.
