Program Overview
Some patients with myelodysplastic syndromes experience anemia and receive blood transfusions as supportive therapy. While such therapy can be helpful in treating anemia, a patient may end up with elevated levels of iron after repeated transfusions. This presentation will focus on the causes, complications, monitoring, and treatment of iron overload. Risk assessment, prognostic scoring systems, and currently available iron chelators will be highlighted.
Educational Objectives
Following this activity, participants should be able to:
- Describe the clinically relevant subtypes of myelodysplastic syndromes and risk assessment with respect to their roles in selecting therapy
- Define best practices for the management of iron overload
Intended Audience
This educational activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians, nurses, and other clinical professionals who manage patients with cancer.
Activity Instructions
Continuing education credit will be awarded to participants who view the presentation, pass the post-test with a score of 80% or higher, and complete the evaluation.
