Program Overview

NCCN, drawing on the expertise of faculty from its 21 Member Institutions, has developed and maintains clinical practice guidelines addressing colon and rectal cancers as part of its complete library of NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology™.

The NCCN Colon and Rectal Cancers Guidelines provide sequential recommendations for the management of lower gastrointestinal malignancies. This program will present these algorithms and focus on new approaches that have been incorporated into the pathways, including advances in surgical technique, such as total mesorectal excision and transanal excision; combined radiation/chemotherapy adjuvant therapy for rectal carcinoma; and the integration of newer agents into the overall strategy for managing advanced disease.

Educational Objectives

Following this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Outline the appropriate workup for patients with colon and rectal carcinomas
  • List the different surgical approaches to management based on site and stage at presentation and indications for transanal surgery in rectal cancer
  • State the role of pre- and postoperative radiation in combination with chemotherapy in the management of rectal cancer
  • Describe the current status of adjuvant chemotherapy for stage II and III colon and rectal cancers
  • Identify new management strategies for metastatic colon and rectal carcinomas

Intended Audience

This educational activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians, nurses, and other clinical professionals who manage patients with cancer.
