Program Overview
Patients with kidney cancer traditionally have not had many treatment choices. Surgery and/or difficult-to-tolerate immunotherapy was all that was available. Because few early symptoms are visible, patients are often diagnosed late with advanced disease. With the FDA approvals of new agents for renal cell carcinoma, a paradigm shift has occurred in the way patients with renal cell carcinomas are treated. In the past two years, patients have gained access to treatments that have been shown to be effective in tumor reduction with fewer side effects than previous cytokine regimens.
The NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology™ Kidney Cancer provide sequential recommendations for the management of renal cell carcinomas. This program will present these algorithms and focus on the new approaches that have been incorporated into the guidelines, including the use of drugs, biologics, and diagnostics.
Educational Objectives
Following this activity, participants should be able to:
- List the appropriate imaging studies for the staging of renal cell carcinoma
- Discuss the surgical techniques utilized in the management of renal cell carcinoma
- Identify patients with advanced disease who would be candidates for initial surgical management
- Describe the response rate and side effect profiles associated with cytokine therapy
- List the mechanism of action and indications for use of targeted agents for unresectable and recurrent renal cell carcinoma
Intended Audience
This educational activity is designed to meet the needs of physicians, nurses, and other clinical professionals who manage patients with cancer.
Activity Instructions
Continuing education credit will be awarded to participants who listen to the presentation and complete the evaluation. Participants should review the learning objectives and faculty disclosure statements prior to listening to a presentation in its entirety. You must be connected to the Internet in order to review and complete the evaluation form. A statement of credit will be electronically generated once you complete the evaluation form. To receive credit, this activity must be completed no later than January 28, 2009. There is no fee for participating in this activity.
