Adult Oncology Services

The work of the Division of Oncology bridges the worlds of basic science, clinical diagnosis and the treatment of cancer. Our basic investigative activities concentrate on immunology, genetics/genomics, pharmacology, DNA repair and oncogene action. Our clinical science covers each cancer type and has a strong focus in clinical trials of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches, as well as in correlative laboratory studies. Medical teams of the Cancer Center are engaged in more than 250 clinical trials, investigating a broad spectrum of new diagnostic, prevention and treatment strategies. Our work is supported by a portfolio of peer-reviewed grants, industrial agreements and research endowments.

The Division of Oncology is committed to providing innovative, timely, state-of-the art patient care. This commitment is reinforced in our teaching program by our full-time and adjunct clinical faculty members. Ongoing research supports this patient-doctor partnership.

Facility	• Outpatient care and clinical investigations for ambulatory cancer patients are conducted at the Stanford Cancer Center, housed in the Stanford Advanced Medicine Center. • Inpatients receive care in the dedicated Oncology Service and in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Service, which are located in the Stanford University Hospital, contiguous to the Medical Center. • Clinical care is also provided at the Veterans' Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) Medical Center in nearby Palo Alto.

Treatment

There are approximately 200 new outpatient visits per month and 1100 returning patient visits per month, or a total of 15,700 patient visits per year, in the Cancer Center. Faculty clinics emphasizing subspecialty or general oncology treat patients with a wide variety of cancers. Clinics are held Monday through Friday in the Stanford Cancer Center. Combined modality clinics offer subspecialty care in head and neck cancer, Hodgkin's disease, genitourinary cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, gynecologic cancer, lung cancer, and breast cancer.

These clinics are attended by medical oncologists, hematologists, radiation therapists and surgeons. Outpatient clinics in general oncology are held twice weekly at the VAPAHCS. The health care professionals at the Stanford Cancer Center recognize that all cancers are not alike. Many of our researchers and physicians are nationally and internationally known for their dedicated work in seeking the most effective cures and treatments for cancer.

For years, Stanford has used a multidisciplinary approach to tackling the most complex and difficult cancer cases. Our tumor boards are renowned for creating customized treatment plans for patients and improving outcomes. Our nurses and medical technicians are equally well known for their expertise and compassionate care.

One of our missions was to bring together outpatient medical and clinical services into one facility. This consolidation makes treatment more convenient for patients and gives physicians greater opportunities to work together to coordinate optimal patient care.

In addition to the latest treatments and advanced technologies, theCancer Center also integrates a variety of innovative amenities and resources designed with patient needs and comfort in mind.

Educating Patients and their Families

An important aspect of patient care is treating the patient as well as addressing the myriad questions family members pose. Patients and their families can access information about their particular condition at the Stanford Cancer Center Library.
