Program Overview

This program is designed to provide advanced practice oncology nurses with information on a variety of topics integral to quality cancer care. It consists of several presentations focused on the complexities of cancer care, symptom management and supportive care issues, and leading strategies to advance nursing research. These presentations include the following topics:

  • Nursing research and patient outcomes are integral components to advance the current state of quality care provided to cancer patients. This presentation will review what defines evidence-based care and how to utilize nursing research and patient outcomes to advance the quality of cancer care.
  • Lung cancer remains the leading cause of death from cancer. This presentation will discuss the populations at risk for developing lung cancer and the impact of current screening and preventive programs for the reduction of lung cancer and lung cancer-associated mortality.
  • Fever and neutropenia are serious complications from cancer-related therapy that can lead to significant morbidity. This presentation will describe the clinical significance of fever and neutropenia, the patient-related and therapy-related factors which increase the risk for fever and neutropenia, and current options for prophylactic therapy.
  • Delirium from cancer or cancer-related therapy can be a distressing side effect for the patient and family. This presentation will discuss cancer-related and therapy-related factors which increase a patient’s risk for delirium, the impact of delirium on a patient’s quality of life, and strategies for early recognition and management of delirium.
  • Lymphedema is a significant complication from breast cancer-related therapy. This presentation will discuss the patient population at risk for developing lymphedema, the impact of lymphedema on a patient’s quality of life, and strategies for the early recognition and management of lymphedema.
  • The treatment options available for localized prostate cancer have varying side effects that could impact a patient’s decision for course of treatment. This presentation will discuss current therapy options for localized prostate cancer and related side effects, the impact on a patient’s treatment decisions and survivorship issues after treatment for prostate cancer.
