Program Overview
The oncology pharmacist plays a pivotal role in developing and administering formulary policies that provide patient access to safe and appropriate use of drugs and biologics. This program consists of presentations which will focus on regulatory initiatives including risk evaluation and mitigation strategies (REMS) and biosimilars; payor programs including comparative effectiveness, specialty pharmacy, orals and disease management; and the implications of biomarkers in pharmacy practice.

Educational Objectives
Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Describe the regulations and policies surrounding REMS
  • Identify the potential impact of REMS on daily pharmacy practice
  • Describe the basic requirements of REMS in cancer care
  • Describe the issues surrounding specialty pharmacies and oncology practice with regard to infusion center “brown bagging”, disease state management programs, and closed distribution of oral anti-cancer agents
  • List issues surrounding specialty pharmacy and oncology practice
  • Identify ways in which payors could incorporate comparative effectiveness results into policy
  • Define “biomarker” and list examples of cancer biomarkers
  • Explain how biomarkers are currently used in the daily practice of cancer medicine
  • Describe how the emerging science with biomarkers will affect the future of cancer medicine

Accreditation
NCCN will work with the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine (PIM) to obtain certification of the activity for pharmacists.
