NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology Symposium™ Breast Cancer and 2006 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium Review

Friday, January 19, 2007 (Chicago, Illinois)

Register now to secure a seat at this symposium.

Program Overview:
The NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology™ consist of a comprehensive set of guidelines detailing the sequential management decisions and interventions for the malignancies that affect 97% of all patients with cancer. Developed by faculty at NCCN Member Institutions using a consensus-based process with explicit review of pertinent data, the guidelines panels develop over 100 separate pathways. The NCCN Breast Cancer Guidelines Panel has developed and continually updates algorithms for management of non-invasive and invasive breast cancer. This symposium is an in-depth analysis of the evidence and clinical decision-making that led to the development of these guidelines. Topics include diagnosis, staging work-ups with discussion of prognostic markers, local therapy, sentinel lymph node biopsy, and the use of hormonal, cytotoxic and biologic therapies in the adjuvant, neoadjuvant, and metastatic settings. The format includes presentation of case reports and audience feedback to highlight application of the guidelines in clinical practice. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the guidelines with their developers and provide input for consideration in future updates. In addition, a review of important studies and updates from the 2006 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium will also be presented.

Educational Objectives:
Following this program, participants should be able to:

  • Identify the principles of guideline development and methods of guideline implementation
  • Discuss how the ASCO/NCCN Quality Measures can be applied to assess the extent to which oncologists are providing quality care to their patients
  • Explain clinical algorithms for the treatment of breast cancer
  • Describe the diagnostic and staging work-up for each stage of breast cancer
  • Identify the role of prognostic markers in breast cancer
  • State the role of sentinel lymph node biopsy and axillary dissection
  • Describe the precepts of surgery and radiation in the management of Stage 0, I, II, and III breast cancer
  • Outline the current recommendations for hormonal and cytotoxic agents as adjuvant therapy for Stage I and II breast cancer
  • Recognize the role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in Stage II and III breast cancer
  • Differentiate agents available for the treatment of advanced or recurrent breast cancer including chemotherapy, biologic therapy, and hormonal therapy
  • Interpret the results of recently reported clinical trials for the treatment of breast cancer in the adjuvant and metastatic settings
  • Compare data from clinical trials of novel chemotherapy agents and combinations
  • Explain the emerging technology utilizing gene array analysis to assess risk of recurrence and selection of systemic therapy
