Adult Oncology

The original James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (The James) opened in July 1990 as the adult patient-care component of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC), which was initially designated by the National Cancer Institute in 1976. In December 2014, a new, greatly expanded and thoroughly modernized James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research institute opened near the original James. The transformational new hospital, which integrates research and patient care more closely than ever before, contains 1.1 million square feet, 21 floors and 306 beds. Drawing upon the expertise of nearly 340 researchers representing 12 of the 15 colleges at Ohio State, the OSUCCC-James is devoted to translating cancer research into innovative patient care for people of central Ohio and beyond.

Through its highly qualified faculty and staff and their interdisciplinary activities, the OSUCCC – James is positioned to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality by:

  • Conducting basic, translational and prevention research
  • Translating results from scientific investigation into quality patient care
  • Providing cancer detection, treatment, and rehabilitation services
  • Contributing to the educational advancement of healthcare professionals
  • Increasing public awareness regarding cancer

Facility

The James' main hospital building on The Ohio State University campus consists of 21 floors comprising 1.1 million square feet. The hospital is licensed for 306 beds, including a 36-bed blood and marrow transplantation unit supported by a cellular-processing lab.  The building also contains:

  • Outpatient examination/consultation rooms
  • Private chemotherapy suites
  • A cancer surgical facility with 14 specialized operating rooms
  • A large above-ground radiation oncology area
  • A translational research laboratory on each floor
  • A cancer clinical trials unit experienced in conducting early-phase trials for qualifying patients
  • One of only a few cancer emergency departments (ED) in the nation. The facility is integrated with The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center’s main ED and contains 15 cancer-treatment stations

In addition, The James offers quality cancer care at University Hospital East, an Ohio State University facility serving the east side of Columbus. It also provides comprehensive outpatient breast health services at the state-of-the-art Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center at 1145 Olentangy River Road near the Ohio State campus. Within the Spielman Center is Hope's Boutique, a James-sponsored shop catering to women with cancer. The hospital also maintains JamesCare at Morehouse, an outpatient facility on several floors at the Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza, 2050 Kenny Road.

At The Ohio State Comprehensive Cancer Center-James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute we offer the most comprehensive care by providing specialized clinical expertise. As national and international leaders in cancer, our specialists help bring the most promising laboratory research into clinical trials. Through those clinical research studies we are able to provide the most innovative treatments for cancer today. Our research studies cover all stages of cancer and include new chemotherapy agents, targeted agents, vaccines and gene therapies, among other novel modalities. Our clinical trials are funded by the National Cancer Institutes of Health, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and various pharmaceutical companies.

Stem Cell Transplant Program

The Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) program at The James is accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), and the following are treated using autologous or allogeneic s stem cell transplants:

Cancer Prevention and Screening

The James offers a number of cancer-prevention strategies and cancer-screening opportunities.

JamesCare for Life is a program within The James that offers multiple services to address the emotional, social and spiritual needs of cancer patients, families and friends. Services include: community outreach; educational classes for patients and families about a broad array of quality-of-life issues during and after cancer treatment; cancer support groups for patients and families; education and training for healthcare professionals; grief and bereavement support for families; creative arts and expressive therapies; resource referral and information; and cancer-specific survivorship initiatives. The James periodically provides free public screenings for head and neck cancer and for skin cancer. In addition, The James' Mobile Mammography Services Program extends mammography to the community in mobile units equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The James also maintains conveniently located mammography suites at : The Babe Zaharias Center in Doan Hall at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, 410 W. 10th Ave.; JamesCare at Macy's in Easton Town Center on the near east side of Columbus; The James at Ohio State University Hospital East, 1492 E. Broad St.; Stoneridge Medical Center at 4037 W. Dublin-Granville Road in Dublin; Care Point Gahanna at 920 N. Hamilton Road; CarePoint Lewis Center at 6515 Pullman Drive; and at the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center at 1145 Olentangy River Road, a facility that offers a full range of services under one roof, including breast cancer detection, diagnosis, counseling, continuity of care and a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals collaborating to meet patient needs.

Periodic educational sessions are available through The James regarding prostate cancer, breast cancer and living with lymphedema. Further, JamesCare for Life offers free monthly integrative-care classes that are open to the public and presented by clinical experts on topics of health/wellness, complementary care, symptom management and quality-of-life issues. 

 

Support Services

To help cancer patients and families resume as normal a life as possible, JamesCare for Life offers support groups and classes. Most groups are cancer-specific (e.g., brain, breast, gynecologic, prostate, head and neck, etc.), but some focus on physical and functional aspects of cancer, such as lymphedema, cosmetic concerns and self-appearance. Adult coping and bereavement groups are also available. In addition, MusicCare promotes the role of music as a healing modality for patients, family members, caregivers and hospital staff by bringing live and recorded music, in a variety of settings, to people whose lives have been touched by cancer. Volunteers provide music that surrounds patients in a soothing, calming atmosphere before, during and after their treatment or surgery. 

Also available to patients and families are referrals to support services such as social work, pastoral care, patient-education packets, psychology clinical nurse specialists/mental health specialists, home care agencies that provide a myriad of services, a clinical nutritionist who works with patients and families, programs specific to survivorship issues, and a multidisciplinary recovery/rehabilitation team. Supportive Care

OSUCCC – James Palliative Care Center

The experts at the OSUCCC – James Center for Palliative Care and Psychosocial Oncology offer nationally acclaimed patient care services that provide patients and families with optimum symptom management, quality of life, care and compassion throughout their cancer journey. This highly experienced team, which works directly with OSUCCC – James medical oncologists and other cancer care specialists, spans a range of disciplines, including physicians, advanced practice nurses, psychologists, clergy members and other experts who specialize in providing emotional, psychological and spiritual support. The palliative care team manages patients’ physical symptoms, provides guidance with complex treatment choices and helps them navigate the healthcare system. JamesCare at Martha Morehouse Medical Plaza offers complete diagnostic services, far-reaching expertise, convenience, comfort and support. We care for adults who are diagnosed with malignant or premalignant diseases or hematologic disorders.


JamesCare at Ohio State University Hospital East

JamesCare at University Hospital East is perfectly positioned to provide residents of east Columbus with complete cancer care close to home. We care for adults with many types of cancer and blood disorders, including breast cancer, melanoma, lymphoma, lung cancer, bladder cancer and prostate cancer.


Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center

The Spielman Center is the first of its kind in the Midwest to offer the full continuum of breast cancer care — from prevention and screening through detection, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship — in one world-class facility.
