NCCN Flash Update: NCCN Guidelines® Updated

NCCN has published updates to the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®) for Older Adult Oncology. These NCCN Guidelines® are currently available as Version 1.2017.

  • Considerations for Older Adults Undergoing Cancer Treatments
    • Falls
      • The use of early and preventative use of durable medical equipment and in-home safety evaluations is recommended for patients with neurotoxicities at high risk for falls.
    • Renal toxicity
      • Serum Creatinine is not a good indicator of renal function in older adults. Calculation of creatinine clearance is recommended to assess renal function and adjust dose to reduce systemic toxicity (OAO-4)
  • Optimizing Communication with Older Adults is a new page in the guidelines. (OAO-B)
  • Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment
    • A new section “Collaboration with the oncologist in the care of an older patient with cancer” was added that outlines the criteria for older adults that may benefit from a referral to a Geriatrician for risk stratification prior to cancer treatment. (OAO-D 1 of 7)
    • Comorbidities
      • Charleson comorbidities index, CIRS, and OARS were added as methods to assess comorbidities. (OAO-D 3 of 7)
  • Care Process for older adults with cancer is a new table in the guidelines (OAO-D 5 of 7)
