About NCCN

Commemorating 20 Years of Innovation in Cancer Care

Robert W. Carlson, MD, Chief Executive Officer, NCCN

Happy New Year! As we take the opportunity to look back on the accomplishments of 2014, NCCN continued to build upon our strategic plan through the implementation and growth of various programs and
initiatives—not the least of which was preparation for the celebration of NCCN’s 20th Anniversary and the publication of the 20th annual editions of six of the original NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®).

NCCN welcomed new leadership in February 2014 with the arrival of Gary Weyhmuller, MBA, as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Coming from Fox Chase Cancer Center, Mr. Weyhmuller brought not only a wealth of operations experience, but also the NCCN Member Institution perspective.

JNCCN – Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network welcomed Margaret Tempero, MD,UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, as its new Editor-in-Chief. Under Dr. Tempero’s guidance, JNCCN will continue to be the primary resource for information on the NCCN Guidelines®, innovation in translational medicine, and scientific studies related to oncology health services.

The  NCCN Member Institutions grew to 25 in 2014 with the addition of two stellar cancer centers—Mayo Clinic Cancer Center and Yale Cancer Center/Smilow Cancer Hospital. Both centers bring unique attributes that enhance the effectiveness of the overall collaboration of the NCCN Member Institutions.

In addition to our ongoing collaboration with McKesson Specialty Health and US Oncology to develop Value Pathways powered by NCCN, we entered into strategic agreements with three major health technology companies to enhance the relevance, efficiency, and availability of NCCN Content.

Through an agreement with Epic, the NCCN Chemotherapy Order Templates (NCCN Templates®) will be integrated into Epic’s Beacon Oncology Information System, and will be available free-of-charge to NCCN Member Institutions through Beacon and via licensing agreements for non-Member Institutions. Additionally, NCCN continued its collaboration with IBM to allow for efficient integration of NCCN Content into health technology platforms through digitization. Finally, in 2014, NCCN entered into an agreement with Flatiron Health to populate an NCCN Outcomes Database containing aggregated electronic health records (EHR) from the NCCN Member Institutions. These three projects especially illustrate the extensiveness of NCCN’s impact on the oncology landscape since our inception 20 years ago.

In health policy, NCCN continued to make strides by hosting three policy summits during which stakeholders discussed key issues relevant to clinical trials design; the impact of health care reform on academic cancer centers; and big data, palliative care, and access, from the patient perspective. In 2015, we look forward to addressing emerging issues in tissue specimen allocation, as well as concerns surrounding value, access, and cost of cancer care.

Finally, with support from the NCCN Foundation®, printed booklets of the 2014 versions of the NCCN Guidelines for Patients® are now available through, expanding access to this much appreciated patient resource. The library of NCCN Guidelines for Patients was also expanded in 2014 with the publication of new patient resources for acute lymphoblastic leukemia and soft tissue sarcoma. We look to further advance our patient resources in 2015 with new editions of the NCCN Guidelines for Patients, as well as patient webinars and patient-friendly treatment summary sheets.

Looking at the year ahead, NCCN is excited to commemorate 20 years of defining and advancing high-quality, high-value cancer care. I know I speak for everyone at NCCN when I say that we are honored to be part of an organization whose resources have grown to become the recognized standard of cancer care in the United States.

Thank you for your continued dedication to NCCN and its mission. We look forward to continued collaboration with you in 2015!
