NCCN Flash UpdatesTM: NCCN Guidelines® Updated

NCCN has published updates to the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®) for Breast Cancer Risk Reduction. These NCCN Guidelines® are currently available as Version 1.2015.

  • Familial Risk Assessment (BRISK-1)
    • This page was modified to align it with the 1.2015 version of BR/OV-1 in the NCCN Guidelines for Genetic/Familial High-Risk Assessment: Breast and Ovarian.
  • Elements of Risk (BRISK-3)
    • “Flat epithelia atypia” is new to the page with the following corresponding footnote: “The data are not as strong with respect to the degree of risk or the benefits of risk reduction therapy in this population.”
    • “Women with atypical hyperplasia have an 86% reduction in risk with therapy. Risk reduction therapy should be strongly recommended” is a new footnote corresponding to “atypical hyperplasia (ductal and lobular).”
  • Components of Risk/Benefit Assessment and Counseling (BRISK-A)
    • Surgery
      • “Nipple-sparing mastectomy is a total mastectomy with preservation of the nipple/areola and breast skin. Efforts should be made to minimize the amount of residual breast tissue” has been added for clarification.
    • Healthy lifestyle
      • The recommendation to “Limit alcohol consumption to less than 1 drink per day” now includes servings: “1 ounce of liquor, 6 ounces of wine, or 8 ounces of beer.”
      • “Breast feeding” is a new bullet under healthy lifestyle.
