NCCN Flash Updates™: NCCN Guidelines® Updated

NCCN has published updates to the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®) for Lung Cancer Screening. These NCCN Guidelines® are currently available as Version 1.2017.

  • Global edits
    • Screening finding parameters were modified to be consistent with recommendations from LungRADS.
    • Annual screening LDCT for 2 years (category 1) and suggest annual LDCT until patient is no longer a candidate for definitive treatment.
    • New pages were added to address the evaluation of screening findings for solid nodules, part-solid nodules, non-solid nodules, and multiple non-solid nodules on a follow-up or annual LDCT. (LCS-7 through LCS-10)
  • Risk Status (LCS-1)
    • Footnote "i" is new: "The NCCN panel recognizes there are individuals who would not have met the NLST criteria but are at similar risk to the NLST cohort and recommends lung cancer screening for these individuals. However, substantial uncertainty exists about the true benefits and harms of screening these individuals. It is reasonable to consider using the Tammemagi lung cancer risk calculator to assist in quantifying risk for individuals in this group, considering a 1.3% threshold of lung cancer risk was considered similar to that of the USPSTF by (Tammemägi MC, Church TR, Hocking WG, et al. Evaluation of the lung cancer risks at which to screen ever- and never-smokers: screening rules applied to the PLCO and NLST cohorts. PLOS Med 2014;11:e1001764)."
    • Footnote "j" modified: "Shared decision-making aids Risk calculators may assist with decision making to in determining if screening should be performed. Tammemägi MC, Church TR, Hocking WG, et al. Evaluation of the lung cancer risks at which to screen ever- and never-smokers: screening rules applied to the PLCO and NLST cohorts. • Screening Findings (LCS-2)
    • The following categories were added: "Initial screening LDCT" and "Follow-up or annual screening LDCT," with the following options: solid nodule, part-solid nodule, non-solid nodule, and multiple non-solid nodules.
