By Jorge Bacigalupo, Global Business Development Specialist, NCCN

On 4 September 2016, National Comprehensive Cancer Network® (NCCN®) leadership participated in a roundtable titled, “The Ways to Support Cancer Patients – U.S. & Poland Perspectives” during the Annual Congress of the Polish Society of Clinical Oncology (PTOK) hosted in the Polish Baltic Philharmonic in Gdansk, Poland.

The PTOK Congress session brought more than 150 oncology professionals, medical oncologists, and patient advocates together for an educational program covering various areas of advancement in the support of patients with cancer in Poland.

NCCN representatives included Robert W. Carlson, MD, Chief Executive Officer, NCCN, and William J. Gradishar, MD, Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, Chair of the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®) Panel for Breast Cancer. Dr. Carlson and Dr. Gradishar discussed major themes, including strategy, experiences and challenges in the efforts to support patients with cancer. Discussion also covered development of better cooperation between patient organizations, scientific societies and authorities, and the Polish experiences in supporting patients with cancer based on the Polish oncology education program.

Dr. Carlson led an interactive presentation titled, “NCCN Strategy to Support Cancer Patients.”  The purpose of the presentation was to educate the attendees on the development and promotion of patient-oriented guidelines, and the motivation of all health providers (physicians, nurses etc.) to spread information and to provide better support patients.

The global influence and demand for the NCCN Guidelines® is ever increasing. Today, nearly half of all registered users of the NCCN Guidelines on NCCN.org report that they live outside the United States. In order to increase the global access to high quality, high value cancer care, NCCN has developed strategic global initiatives.
