1 Esophageal cancer basics

Review

• The esophagus moves food from the throat

down into the stomach.

• The wall of the esophagus has four layers.

• Esophageal cancer often starts in cells that

line the inside wall or starts in cells that make

mucus.

• Cancer cells form a tumor since they don’t

grow and die as normal cells do.

• Cancer cells can spread to other body parts

through lymph or blood.
