What is rectal cancer?

It is a cancer of cells that line the inside wall of the rectum and make mucus.

What are the stages of rectal cancer?

Stage 0 cancer have not grown beyond the first layer of the rectal wall.

Stage I cancers have grown into inner layers of the rectal wall.

Stage II cancers have grown through or outside of the rectal wall.

Stage III cancers have spread to nearby small structures called lymph nodes.

Stage IV cancers have spread to distant organs, such as the liver and lungs.
