Breast cancer recurrence

Review

Review

• Breast cancer may return in or near the

breast, near to where the breast was

removed, or in distant organs.

• Treatment planning is needed for a

recurrence.

• Treatment for a local recurrence is based on

prior treatment. Surgery is advised if possible.

Treatment should also include radiation

therapy if not received before. Systemic

treatment may be part of your treatment.

• Treatment for a recurrence in your lymph

nodes depends on which lymph nodes have

cancer. Surgery with radiation therapy is

advised for a recurrence in axillary lymph

nodes. Recurrences in other lymph nodes

should be treated with radiation therapy.

Systemic treatment may be received after any

type of lymph node recurrence.
