NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™

About the NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™

The NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ includes information designed to support clinical decision-making around the use of radiation therapy in patients with cancer and is based directly on the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology (NCCN Guidelines®).

The NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ includes recommendations pertaining to indications, modalities, clinical scenario, purpose, as well as the dosing regimens used for treatment. Additional information includes the clinical notes related to the specific recommendation. The NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ also documents information on disease stage and histology. The NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ includes a full complement of radiation therapy recommendations found in the current NCCN Guidelines, including specific treatment modalities such as 2D/3D conformal external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), intra-operative radiation therapy (IORT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS)/stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT)/stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR), image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT), low dose-rate (LDR)/high dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy, radioisotope, and particle therapy.

The NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ is accessible through an easy-to-use, web-based user interface. The NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ includes a full complement of radiation therapy recommendations found in the current Guidelines. The NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ is reviewed on a continual basis to ensure that the recommendations take into account the most current evidence.

Important Considerations

  • Clinicians should use the NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ in conjunction with the NCCN Guidelines.
  • Recommendations in the NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ are appropriate for most, but not all patients. Clinicians are expected to use their clinical judgment in decision-making.
  • Order of the RT recommendation listed in the NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ does not represent treatment preference.
  • NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ assumes appropriate planning for treatment which may be coded for billing separately (ie., 3D simulation may be performed for IMRT treatments; 4D simulation may be performed for respiratory guidance).

NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ Development

NCCN develops the NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ based upon each multidisciplinary Guidelines Panel's evaluation of available scientific evidence, including published literature and the expert judgment of the panel members. The widely accepted NCCN Categories of Evidence and Consensus score individual NCCN Radiation Therapy recommendations. Conversion into the NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ occurs by extracting data directly from the NCCN Guidelines. Radiation Therapy information may be present within the algorithm and footnotes on Guidelines pages as well as in appendices and "Principles of Radiation Therapy" pages included in selected Guidelines. Discretization into disease and radiation therapy-related elements within a database follows data extraction. Select Guidelines panel members (e.g. chair, vice-chair and radiation oncologist) then review this database content for accuracy on a Guideline-by-Guideline basis. The NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™, a web-based user interface, provides a searchable and user-customized display of approved NCCN radiation therapy recommendations.

Transparency of NCCN Guideline and Compendia development is central to the philosophy, policies, and procedures of NCCN. NCCN makes the policies and processes for developing and maintaining the NCCN Guidelines available to the public on the NCCN website. Identification of newly published research, NCCN Member Institution review, external stakeholder submissions, and panel review occur on an ongoing basis with at least annual review performed for NCCN Guidelines for each disease. Additional evaluation of evidence for Guidelines revision occurs more frequently as new therapies and/or other potentially practice-changing data become available. NCCN updates the NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ to correspond to the relevant NCCN Guidelines. The NCCN Radiation Therapy recommendations within the NCCN Radiation Therapy Compendium™ reflects the conclusions of the multidisciplinary NCCN Guidelines Panels.
